Coventry City Centre Cultural Gateway

TJ Brayne supported GRAHAM on Coventry City Centre Cultural Gateway, the transformation of the city's former IKEA store into a major home for arts, culture, research and collections. Our foundations, drainage and incoming services package provided essential early infrastructure for the renewed construction programme.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Coventry City Centre Cultural Gateway is repurposing a former city-centre retail building as a shared cultural destination. The completed building is intended to bring together Arts Council England, the British Council, CV Life and Coventry University. Coventry University will occupy two floors for research, innovation and enterprise activity, while the cultural partners will use the building to house, manage and provide access to important collections.

‍

TJ Brayne's groundworks and civils scope covered foundations, the drainage network and incoming services. These works supported the re-established programme by putting the core below-ground infrastructure in place for the next stages of the redevelopment.

Incoming Service Installation
Essential below-ground infrastructure within the former IKEA building
Foundations and services for a complex building conversion

TJ Brayne's role focused on the core civil engineering elements needed to support the next phase of the conversion. The foundations provide structural support where new construction is required, and the drainage network establishes the routes needed to serve the building's future uses. Incoming services complete the essential below-ground connections for the renewed facility.

This work formed part of a programme that had to regain momentum after the previous main contractor entered administration. Delivering the package within an existing city-centre building required the new infrastructure to work with the retained structure and the requirements of several future occupiers, each with different collection, research and public-facing functions.
