TJ Brayne has been nominated to build the foundations and fundamental infrastructure on a new Galliford Try Spon Gate Net-Zero Primary School project. The project took place within the city’s conservation and archaeological area which allocated additional complexities to the overall completion of the project. TJ Brayne’s responsibility throughout the project was to undertake the groundworks and civil infrastructure whilst being mindful of the area’s intricacies.
Near to Coventry city centre, Spon Gate Primary School is being rebuilt as one of the Department for Education’s new generation of Net Zero Carbon schools. Appointed to complete the groundworks and civils works on the project, Galliford Try’s £12.8m project will replace the existing school with a new single-form building whilst the refurbishment of the locally-listed Spon Gate building to provide facilities for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.
TJ Braynes’s scope covers the essential below-ground infrastructure needed to bring the new school out of the ground. Delivered with particular care given the site’s archaeological sensitivity and proximity to Coventry’s conservation area.
The key objective for this project was to establish the development-ready platform that would allow Galliford Try to progress construction of the new single-form building with confidence - while working sensitively within a site of archaeological interest and conservation area.
TJ Brayne's role was central to this project. Solid foundations and incoming services needed to be established early to keep the programme on track, while a carefully designed drainage network and attenuation tanks would manage surface water sustainably across the site. Getting this early infrastructure right also protected the archaeological and heritage of the local area whilst shaping how the site could be developed.
